Since it is about to be Labor Day, here is my Labor Day wish for everyone. Make this the start of a new trend. Once a week, double your normal or most strenuous workout or exercise routine.
In cycling, many of us easily fall into a rut we call "medium distance / medium intensity." This is the best way to lose ground slowly. After all, no one is getting younger. What I have done this year is exercise fewer days but
extend the time - substantially - once/week and
increase the intensity (HIIT) - once/week.
All tallied, the time I commit has not changed. However, I can tell my "top end" is better - I haven't stagnated.
The key is to find something you like. Too many of us default to a gym membership. Look for alternatives. Consider joining a group. This year, we established a local cycling group in my area and use the app "GroupMe" to communicate. Last year I trained solo probably 75% of the time. It's tough to motivate day in - and day out - when it's just you. This year, I have only trained solo about 25% of the time. The group sets the schedule so you cannot procrastinate. This has been a great motivation. Sometimes the workouts have not been exactly what I would have planned - however showing up is always the RIGHT first step.
To quote Dr. Harshfield. The 2nd best time to start something is TODAY.
My wish for everyone on Labor Day?
I wish you all try to labor all day long!
Just FYI, this is what I will look like on Labor Day after turning a set of pedals 50,000 times over 5+ hours (hopefully closer to 5)
Labor Day, for sure.
Keep in mind the 5 mechanisms that drive essentially all chronic diseases.
1. Poor micronutrient status from poor diets, behaviors, or poor absorption.
2. Thrive vs survive. In other words, due to stressors, a person becomes vulnerable to low-grade toxicity, inflammation, or infections.
3. Stealth and chronic infections and toxins, with infections being the greatest offender.
4. Perpetual low-grade inflammation caused by infections, specific sensitivities, and processed foods.
5. Lack of autophagy due to sedentary lifestyle and constant eating.
