Here is today's video on Macular Disease as a systemic cardiovascular disease.
Here is the slide deck on macular disease and its relation to systemic disease and the risk for early mortality. In the case of severe macular disease—that is, the "bleeding" for macular hemorrhage—indeed, one treatment pathway must be the removal of pooled blood.
"Pooled blood in macular edema can occur when blood vessels in the retina leak into the macula, causing swelling and fluid buildup. This can lead to blurry vision and other visual symptoms, such as distortion and difficulty reading. If left untreated, macular edema can cause permanent vision loss."
However, remediation of the pooled blood is only part of the story. A parallel path MUST BE determined and treated at a local and systemic level. The AREDS #13 study explains that macular disease, at any level, is a cardiovascular disease with a significant increase in early mortality risk.
